Last week Darcy Miller visited London from New York. Mark Niemierko insisted on hosting an afternoon tea in her honour, allowing the British wedding industry a chance to meet the Editorial Director of the most influential Bridal magazine in the world.

Mark Niemierko hosted an intimate champagne afternoon tea within the Oliver Messel Penthouse and Pavilion at The Dorchester, Park Lane, last week. For guest of honour Darcy Miller, Editorial Director of Martha Stewart Weddings.

The best of the British wedding industry came to meet Darcy as well as celebrate how Martha Stewart Weddings is the most influential Bridal magazine not just for American and British Brides, but for Brides all over the world.

The event had a quintessential British twist throughout.

Handsome soldier waiters served afternoon tea sandwiches along with mini scones, washed down with Rosewater cocktails alongside Dorchester Iced teas. The sweet side of the menu included chocolate éclairs, fruit tarts, chocolate dipped strawberries and Chocolate Lolly Pops as well as Peggy Porschen strawberry and champagne and sticky toffee flavored cupcakes.

Guests included bloggers Kat Williams of Rock N Roll Bride and Charlotte O’Shea from Rock My Wedding, photographer Julia Boggio, Ian Carmichael the Queens Hairdresser, dress designers Caroline Castigliano, Sassi Holford, Elizabeth Emanuel, Ritva Westenius, David Fielden, Phillipa Lepley, Bruce Oldfield and Stewart Parvin. Newly engaged jewellry designer Lauren Adriana, Henry Taylor the Head of Personal Shopping at Reiss and Mich Turner of Little Venice Cake Company.

All of whom walked away with Niemierko gift bags including a Niemierko photo book, Niemierko gift card set, Dorchester chocolate truffles and a Penhaligon’s fragrance set.

Florist Rob Van Helden arranged an abundance of flowers in a variety of pink shades to fill the fireplace and table tops, clothed in gold linen.

As guests walked through the Penthouse to the Pavilion within the Ladies waiting room dresses by some of the biggest names in British Bridal design were on display. Including the forward thinking David Fielden, the Queen’s couturier Stewart Parvin and established Sassi Holford.

The rather wonderful and charming Bruce Oldfield, popped into the Niemierko Wedding Academy at The Dorchester the other week.

Naturally Mr Oldfield’s visit was a huge highlight for the students. Prior to the Q&A session Bruce joined Mark Niemierko for a quick chat on what a bride should consider before she goes shopping for THE ONE. We are talking dress here, not groom!

FRONT ROW: New York Bridal Market Autumn/Winter 2012

Having just returned from New York we’ve been catching up with Mark on his highlights from Bridal Market. The leading names in bridal dress designers showed off their newest collections in the Big Apple.

Floral modern detail was spotted throughout at Christos, Monique Lhuillier and Reem Acra. Angel Sanchez delivered his dreamy collection as always including a dash of blush pink. Whilst Vera Wang, inspired by witchcraft, turned bridal into black, along with a touch of nude! Marchesa made us fall into feathers. For the bride looking for a sassy fit, mermaid gowns were seen aplenty. Whilst the ballgown, received a ruffled twist, whether it be through yards of tulle or tiered skirts.

This weekend our friends at Rock My Wedding exclusively featured a behind the scenes video from a Niemierko Wedding. See how a church is filled with hydrangeas to a elegant dinner and mesmerising firework display. But how did Mark and his couple firstly get to plan such a large scale wedding, with such detail, in just four months? We have previously explained how Mark likes to plan a wedding in stages, always starting the planning process by breaking a wedding day up. In this case we had five stages to the wedding day. CEREMONY, DRINKS RECEPTION, DINNER, CAKE AND FIREWORKS then finally DANCING.

You can read about the wedding in much greater detail on Rock My Wedding’s post. But we thought we’d give you a peek into the planning stages and view the mood boards that were presented to the couple. Take a look at the stages and match them up to the correct parts in the video. Niemierko style of course, the breakfast was held within the Connaught Hotel’s elegant Regency Room. Mr. N congratulated Peta Hunt, on becoming the magazine’s Editor at Large and Sally Dixon with her new role as Fashion Director.

We are now struggling a tad to get into work mode after such a delightful breakfast.

BACKSTAGE: Happy 30th Mr. N!

Our very own Mr. N turned 30 on Friday 17th June. So what do you do for your birthday party when you are renowned for organising the most amazing weddings and events for others. Well you simply have one of the most infamous Hotel Bars in London become yours for the evening, of course.

The ultra-stylish Connaught Hotel Bar, was exclusively Mark’s for one night. Invited guests, which included close friends, some wedding industry folk and the odd Niemierko couple along with Mark’s mother (that’s Mrs N. to you) enjoyed champagne, sipped several Brambles and Dry Ice Cucumber Martini’s. Served along with canapés by Hélène Darroze, which included Foie Gras Lollipops and mini Croque-monsieur’s.

Peggy Porschen designed a cake to include Mark’s “30th” monogram. Her tipsy orange filling was washed down perfectly with an Espresso Martini, and even more dessert canapés. McQueens provided the white hydrangea floral displays, Mark’s favourite.

And if you stayed late enough Agostino Perrone, the Connaught Bar’s head mixologist (and International Bartender of the Year, 2010) brought out his Martini trolley. Martini’s were mixed. Very much so. Which ensured our Saturday morning wasn’t so bright-eyed.

Not bad for 30. Happy birthday Mr. N.

There are so many different wedding insurances out there, should I take one out and what does it cover?

Mary, Bournemouth.

Wedding insurance is essential. You're insuring against mainly an act of God, like you're venue going on fire, or London flooding. It is cheap to take out, and it will put your mind at rest. My first piece of advice is trust no one but the best with your wedding day, your chances of something going wrong decrease hugely along with your blood pressure levels.

However, it all depends on how much you are spending on the wedding. If you are worried that something terrible might happen like your suppliers letting you down on the day then taking a wedding insurance out with help protect to from unfortunate events that may arise prior your wedding or after. Wedding insurances range from as low as £20 to £350 and most should cover loss or damage, supplier failures and should the bride or groom fall ill on the big day, a good insurance will cover (up to the policy limit) of having to re-arrange the day. It’s going to give you a peace of mind, it’s definitely worth it.

Dear Mr N,

I am wondering if you can help me come up with an alternative type of music or band. I have an aversion to string quartets as I feel they really stiffen the atmosphere. For my champagne reception I would really like to have some background music that would make everyone loosen up, what would you suggest?

Ruth, Manchester.

String quartets are a favourite among couples for their choice of background music as it does set a formal and elegant tone for the ceremony or reception. It could be however that your problem with string instrumentalists lies in the music that they play. Keep in mind that its likely to be the classical music that bores you. Why not throw in an accordionist and liven the music up.

You don’t want anything too lively for the drinks reception, you just need music that is uplifting. A jazz band is a great option as its still classy but upbeat. The best advice I can give you is to make sure you sample the music before you hire, it’s the only way you can be sure.

BRITISH SPLENDOUR

Dear Mr N,

I am getting married in early October and want to have a very traditional British wedding. What sort of classic venue’s would you recommend, and how can I put a little twist into my British theme?

Sophia, Ipswich.

Traditional British weddings are going to make a big comeback this year, and with that you will want yours to stand out. We are spoilt for choice in the UK for stunning venues in idyllic locations. The Four Seasons in Hampshire is a favourite of mine.

To keep with the British theme but to give it a particular twist and approach it differently to others, why not pick a period in British history to model your theme upon. Pick an opulent period such as the Victorian period, or even more extravagant something Jacobean inspired. Think royal red and blue, teamed with gold. The Jacobean period was all about luxury, exotic goods and rich colours. Smythson stationery will capture your British theme. Choose a classic British jeweller and go for coloured stones such as sapphires. Make your venue and wedding breakfast banquet-esque, however that doesn’t mean having a throne, throne’s = tacky.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION

Dear Mr N,

I’m getting married in a years time, and although I am looking forward to it there is a part of me that is slightly dreading it. I am naturally shy and really hate being the centre of attention, what can you suggest to deflect attention away from me on the day?

Rosie, Milton Keynes.

On your wedding day you do get a lot of attention, especially as the bride. However I wouldn’t be scared, as you can alter the arrangement of the day to suit how you feel. Don’t make yourself feel uncomfortable when its your day.

The first thing that will make it less intimidating is creating a semi-closed off area for the ceremony. You could ask your production team to build a small pavilion which you could have completely covered in ivy and flowers, this way you feel like its just you and your fiancé, but your guests can also watch and feel a part of the ceremony.

For the reception have the tables arranged so that its not far for you to walk to your table as you’re welcomed into the dinner space. Avoid the first dance and cutting the cake, these are formalities that can easily be left aside. The most important thing to remember is that its your day, and don’t let anyone spoil it for you!

THE WEDDING WEEKEND

Dear Mr N,

My wedding is in late August and I am getting married in a countryside hotel with beautiful surroundings. Aside from the wedding I want to entertain all of my guests the day after the wedding as everyone is staying at the hotel. What would you suggest?

Becky, Bristol.

It is best to keep the day after the wedding less formal than the wedding itself. That doesn’t however mean that it has to be low-key. Depending on how far your budget stretches there are quite a large number of options. It is never a great idea to push anything in particular on your guests, give them an option for a pre-lunch activity such as shooting, or using the spa, or something like a cricket match.

Late august would be an ideal time for a barbeque or lunch party the next day with possibly different food stations. It’s a good opportunity to get the most out of your flowers, have them rearranged for the tables outside and at the food stations.

Having a lunch the next day gives you a chance to catch up with all your guests, and it’s a nice way to end what I’m sure will be a fabulous weekend.

CLEVER COST CUTTING

Dear Mr N,

I have quite a flexible and workable budget for my wedding. However, efficiency driven, I am adamant not to spend money stupidly, so would love to know where I can avoid spending money where I don’t need to?

Smart cost-cutting is something that everyone should aim for. Even with the largest budget there is no good reason to waste money. Being cost-efficient does not mean you are scrimping on style. The best way to be on top of your budget is factoring all the small costs in when you visit your suppliers, do your research and try to develop an understanding of general prices so you know whether you’re getting a good price or not.

A good example of clever budgeting: the price of your dress does not include the alterations that you will need for the dress to be fitted to your body. Knowing this spend the money on alterations and save the money on relocating your flowers for example. There is usually a cost to move your flowers, ask some close friends or bridesmaids to organise them being moved from the ceremony to the reception.

Certain cost-cutting strategy’s such as bringing in your own champagne and wine don’t necessarily save you any money, corkage fee’s could add up to more than the venue’s champagne prices.

Simple cost-cutting plan’s such as avoiding anything bespoke will save you money, consider the area’s you may have forgotten about such as thank you presents and shoe’s for your bridesmaids.

We are having a small ceremony and wedding breakfast with our closest friends and family, followed by a big party in the evening. What is the etiquette around save the dates and invitations and also, how can we make our evening guests feel special on the day?

Save the dates are usually sent 6-12 months prior to the wedding, but varies of course if you are having a destination wedding which you then should leave more time to send them out and be sure to write “Invitation and full details to follow”. Ideally the wedding invites should be sent out 2-3 months before the big day and allow at least 3 weeks to set the RSVP date. Traditionally however, invitations go out just 6 weeks before the wedding. The most important part of having guests arrive at intervals throughout the day is their arrival, welcome them with a glass of champagne so they feel instantly a part of the party.

MARK MEETS: The Queens Florist Simon Lycett

Since 1993, Simon Lycett has been creating fabulous flower decorations, earning him a reputation as Britain's finest florist.

Whilst Prince Charles’ florist was chosen to arrange the flowers for the Royal Wedding, Simon doesn’t miss out on the Royal action. He’s the preferred florist of the Queen none the less. And Niemierko Brides of course! Mark meets the man that gets her Majesty’s approval when it comes to picking a peony.

How did you end up as a florist…
Well, the start was at the precocious age of 7, with my entries in the Warwick Horticultural Society’s annual show. I did my first wedding aged 14. Who knows how I’ll end up?!

What words would you use to best describe your style at…
Whatever we do, we do it with copious amounts of flowers! I suppose you could call me a Floral Prostitute as I like to give the Client exactly what they want and make their floral fantasies a fabulous reality.

Where do you get inspiration for your creations and how do you keep your creations so inventive and unique…
I’m very lucky with my raw materials and it’s easy to have inspiration with Mother Nature at the helm. I find inspiration in the change of seasons. What works at one point in the year could be tweaked a bit and with different blooms and foliages available look completely new and unique.

What do you love about working in the wedding industry…
What I love about the wedding industry is that we’re all working together to make one couple’s dreams come true for a day. It’s all a bit of a fairy tale and I’m certainly one for a happy ending!

What do you loathe about working in the wedding industry…
Well, at moments in my career I’ve had to have a quiet word with the bride away from the Mother to find out that the brides wishes are being adhered to as well!

What’s your most memorable moment…
It would have to be when His Holiness the Pope passed away and consequently HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall delayed their wedding by a day. I had approximately 30,000 daffodils to keep fresh and ensure their peak was actually the subsequent day!

What can’t you live without…
My fabulous team. All my staff have worked for me for longer than a decade and so we know each other pretty well! They know exactly how to interpret my directions and we get on like one big floral family!

Something old…
My collection of old wedding photographs – the rule is every bride must be carrying her bouquet, but from Victorian and Edwardian to ‘60’s – they are hysterical and a fascinating insight into social history.

Something new…
My i-pad – no more carrying of heavy portfolios!

Something borrowed…
The wonderful Victorian lochside house on the West Coast of Scotland which my partner Nicholas’s family lend to us each summer! It’s peaceful and remote. No mobiles work and plenty of walks on the beach. Sitting contemplating the view re charges my batteries.

Something blue…
A great big armful of Forget-Me-Nots! Or “Remember Me’s” as my young nephew used to call them!

Who do you admire most in the industry…
You! Of course! You and your team are always fun to work with and introduce us to some wonderful clients!

Which season do you think is best suited to weddings…
I adore getting carried away with Spring blooms, fragrant narcissi and lily of the valley, but come summer with the romance rose and all the variety available – it’s dreamy. I have done many an exotic winter wedding though…it’s all about creating a fairytale.

What do you think makes a wedding most memorable…
When the thoughts and dreams of the bride and groom really are manifested in their special day with little touches in the decorations to reflect their lives which are now entwined…it’s all in the detail.

What does marriage mean to you in three words…
Fun, fabulous florals.

Love! They make a wedding!

Essential item for a bride on her wedding day…
Hair grips! And Rescue Remedy!

MAID OF WHAT?

Dear Mr N

I’ve made my sister and three of my best friends as bridesmaids and have no idea who should be doing what. Should I appoint a Maid of Honour and what are their responsibilities?

Zoe, Berkshire.

It’s totally up to you who you have as Maid of Honour, typically it’s either your sister but you can also have a close friend. The responsibilities include helping you organise the wedding day, making decisions, being the head of the bridesmaids and the hen party. It’s a big role so although you may want to have your sister as the MOH, if she is not organised or reliable enough then she won’t make the cut. Just remember the MOH is someone you need to be confident with and can trust to make big decisions for you like finding a hairdresser or the simple things like a keeping you sane when the stress gets just a little too much!

For those of you who received a Christmas Card last December from Mark you’ll know of Ruby Grace Niemierko. A very lucky girl to be the niece of our very own Mr N. But life just gets better for this 6 year old. Last week during her Easter School break Ruby popped into Peggy Porschen’s parlour to meet the cake master herself.

Peggy treated Ruby to cupcakes and cookies with a Ruby Slipper theme, as well as making one of her delicious mini-tiered cakes.

The treats didn’t end there. Ruby also took home a child sized Peggy Porschen apron so she can hone those baking skills at home!

Dear Mr N,

I know most people want their wedding to be different from everyone else’s. I’ve attended 7 weddings in the last year and I just can’t help but feel that the predictability of each wedding makes me bored. The venue’s all end up looking relatively similar and the format bores me to tears. What can I do to make my wedding completely different from everyone else’s, how do I achieve the ‘wow’ factor with a venue?

Surprise is the element that most weddings lack and that will make yours stick out in the memory of your guests. The first thing you can surprise them with and keep them guessing is choosing an unconventional venue for the ceremony and reception. Its important to keep in mind that any venue can become anything you want it to be if you have the right team on your side. A way to achieve this would be to choose a venue that you can completely transform an art gallery such as the Saatchi gallery would be a good venue. Have the ceremony and dinner and drinks all in separate parts so your guests will be surprised throughout the day.

Another way to liven up your wedding is to have a surprise piece of entertainment, but keep it short, the essence of good entertainment is keeping it brief.

I’m getting married next winter, I know its going to be cold but is it really necessary to wear something for warmth and what kind of thing would you suggest?

British winters are our most predictable season, it is a guarantee it will be cold. To still look chic and bridal, opt for a bolero or shrug. There really is nothing more miserable than a cold bride with a frozen smile, be sensible. Unless you are fur-averse, a fur bolero will look most chic, avoid block white and go for something with flecks of cream and light brown. Depending on which designer shop you find your dress in there is likely to be a section of great items to keep you warm, but to keep you looking fabulous!

What’s your most memorable moment since opening the atelier…
The great Oscar de la Renta visiting my shop and congratulating me for being the top seller of his collection. I had invited my fabulous mother to the salon for this event, and he was very kind and gracious to her. To this day, he always asks about her! I do have to add a second..... I appeared as myself on Gossip Girl, which was a true thrill.

What can’t you live without…
The feeling of accomplishment and making my family and self proud. Also a good support system.

Who do you admire most in the industry…
I admire all of the designers that I work with for constantly keeping my segment of the industry fresh and exciting. I can't imagine it's easy season after season to design white dresses that remain unique and signature of their talents. Some of my favourites who are also personal friends include Angel Sanchez, Monique Luilluer, Anne Barge, Elizabeth Fillmore and Lela Rose.

Who would you say is an iconic bride you would love to dress…
Jackie Kennedy.

Autumn, especially in New York.

A stunning and breath taking gown, of course! Second to that is the music and decor.

A GIRL OF ALL SEASONS

Dear Mr N,

Although I really want a summer wedding where people are relaxed with sunglasses on, I want the romance of a winter wedding with all the low lighting. How can I have the best of both?

I appreciate your dilemma, summer weddings feel instantly relaxed, where as winter weddings feel instantly cosy and romantic.

I would suggest holding your wedding ceremony in the late afternoon/early evening, this way you can have an outdoor drinks ceremony as the sun sets and move to your reception area for dinner and dancing when the sun goes down. Organise the lighting so that dim candles and lights are lit at sun set. You need to make the transitionary period from light to dark effortless so that the dark romantic setting that Winter offers is instantly achieved.

So tell us how you got started in cake making...My A level Home Economics teacher asked me to decorate her wedding cake. I had won a cookery competition but never decorated a cake before so I attended a 4 day course to learn the basics and really enjoyed it. I went to university, studied for a degree in Food Science and Nutrition and was sponsored by United Biscuits, spending my industrial year working at McVities looking after Christmas Cake, Jaffa cake and biscuit production. I landed a job as a Patisserie buyer at Harvey Nichols and then started decorating more cakes in my spare time until 1999 when I left HN and started Little Venice Cake Company.

Who do you really admire in the industry...Paul Thomas - Paul Thomas Flowers. His flowers blow me away. He is passionate, talented and dedicated, yet down to earth and the kindest, most genuine person I have met in this industry.

Bridesmaids, love or hate...
Adore! I had 4 and they were all flower girls. Ranging from chief bridesmaid age 5 to the youngest who was not quite 3!

What words would you use to best describe LVCC…
Refined, opulent, flawless, quality, premium, couture, bespoke, elegant, inspirational, professional.

Where do you get inspiration for your creations and how do you keep your creations so inventive...
Fashion plays a huge role in my inspiration. I love to see the emerging trends with colour, texture, design. Drawing from vintage and cutting edge designer collections to create stunning cakes. We are constantly evolving and designing new collections trialling new cake recipes and techniques.

What do you love about working in the wedding industry…
No 2 weeks ever the same and we are fortunate to work with weddings which are always happy, celebratory occasions. I love to create the bride's dream cake.

What do you loathe about working in the wedding industry…
The deadlines can sometimes be a challenge and invariably work always has to come first which can mean sacrificing home and social life.

What’s your most memorable moment for LVCC
My Goodness! So many wonderful highlights, going to Skibo for Madonna's wedding, meeting Pierce Brosnan and creating his wedding cake, travelling to Madrid with David Beckham's 30th birthday cake, my book launches, delivering the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Wedding cake to Buckingham Palace, having my cake featured in Nanny McPhee, seeing my cakes in the windows of Harrods, having cake launch in Waitrose, Sainsbury and Tesco, filming my own TV series, being awarded the Harpers Bazaar and Chanel Entrepreneur of the Year..... But the pinnacle has to be receiving an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list last June and attending my Investiture at Buckingham Palace last November.

What can’t you live without…

What trends can you see emerging in the cake market…
1950s revival remains strong with influences of Mad Men, deep ivory, taupe ad old pink colours. Pearls, lace and detail. Traditional pillars are beginning to see a revival - only when combined with extra deep tiers.

So many exciting projects.... New book Mich Turner's Cake Masterclass has recently been published and is already Number ONE in the charts. It is all ready on its second print run and my next book has just been commissioned. We have a range of equipment lunching later this year and we begin our new TV series. Ha! You’d be amazed, some of our most chic clients choose to have buffets! Done well and for the right party, with modern presentation, colourful salads etc I think they can work well to create an informal atmosphere. Personally for a wedding I think sit down is more elegant.

I’m having a table of kids at my wedding and finding it difficult to find entertain for them. What do you suggest?

Have chalkboards laid out on the tables as place names, with little pots of chalk, colouring books and crayons, that will keep them busy for a while. Also you can give them the responsibility of handing the guestbook around and disposable cameras for them to capture precious memories. Or why not bring in a Children’s Entertainer like Jojo’s Travelling Minstrels!

For later on in the evening part of the wedding, consider hiring some babysitters to whisk the kids off while their parents relax and enjoy themselves, this way you’re keeping everyone happy, and the parents get to let their hair down.

I think a couple should make a list - short or long - on all the things that inspire them, their hobbies, likes and dislikes across all mediums - fashion, decor, movies, travel.

Who would you say is an iconic bride…
Elizabeth Taylor. After eight weddings Miss Taylor has had the classic white wedding, the civil wedding and the destination wedding. I think each one of them could inspire today’s bride in both wedding and fashion style.

What do you love about working within the wedding industry…
Weddings encompass so many different industries: food and beverage, home decor and gifts, fashion and accessories, flowers, music, stationery, etiquette and travel.

What do you loathe about working within the wedding industry…
I hate that the media portrays brides as greedy and mean and make every woman planning a wedding think she’s a bridezilla because she has an opinion on what she wants her wedding to look and feel like.

What can’t you live without…
Chocolate chip pancakes.

What does marriage mean to you in three words…
Love, fun and laughter.

Ideal wedding venue…
My dream was to get married at the Grand Ballroom at The Plaza Hotel so I think that would be my ideal location.

How does British style compare to American style when it comes to weddings…
American weddings tend to be more fairytale princess and formal than UK weddings.

Which season do you think is best suited to weddings…
I like weddings held late spring/early summer when it’s not too hot out and late summer/early fall when it’s not too chilly.

Love! As long as you limit bridesmaids to your close friends and relatives.

Everyone knows shopping when you’re not in the mood is a difficult task. Wedding dress shopping however is in a whole different league, not only should you look your best but you should feel your best. Blow-dry and a mani/pedi is a necessity, nice lingerie, good outfit. Apart from that, upmarket wedding stores will have heels etc for you to see the full overall look. If you are feeling your best, the chances are you will have a much more successful day shopping.

What you really need when you’re dress shopping is someone with you that has a good eye and an honest opinion, which is why Mr N is so good at it.

Eclectic

How best would you advise a Bride to personalise her wedding day jewellery…
I would always suggest wearing an heirloom on your wedding day if possible - a piece belonging to a Great Aunt or Grandmother always feels special. However, if your family don't exactly own the crown jewels, try being a bit more bold - wear jewellery that will make a bit of impact and which adds some colour and drama. There is a time and a place for white - it's called your dress. Let your jewellery show your personality.

Who would you say is an iconic bride you would love to wear Lauren Adriana…
The Queen of Jewellery herself - Elizabeth Taylor of course! I'd settle for being in any one of her (numerous) weddings.

What do you love about working within the wedding industry…
I really enjoy the hands-on approach the brides take - working with them to create something special that they will treasure forever. The great thing about bridal jewellery is that it will always be worn; it's not just for that one day.

What do you loathe about working within the wedding industry…
Tempers can run a little high sometimes - it's important to have some perspective. I tell my clients - don't aim for perfection, aim for the 'illusion' of perfection.

What motivates you the most…
The fear that I will miss something, or knowing that my work can always be better gives me a kick up the bum, and gets me into the studio.

What has been your proudest moment of your career so far…
Getting a call from Charlotte Stockdale saying that Natalia Vodianova wants to wear my jewellery in her new lingerie campaign - that was pretty surreal.

Who do you respect and admire within the wedding industry…
Oooh - this is an easy one! Mark Niemierko (duh) for being a good friend and having excellent taste in champagne. Peter Langner, for cutting the best dresses. Sally Dixon for being the most effortlessly stylish human being on earth. Peta Hunt for her beautiful shoots, and for being the first to feature my work. Andrew Prince for being too talented to know what to do with it and for being one of my first friends in this industry.

Who’s your biggest rival…
Lets just say, they know who they are - and I'm coming up fast...

What does marriage mean to you in three words…
Mortgage application form.

Which season do you think is best suited to weddings…
I love that bit between summer and autumn proper - so September, October. I'll call it Sumtumn.

Bridesmaids… love or loathe…
Loathe - I'm an only child. Like hell I'm sharing the spotlight.

Trend prediction for wedding jewellery…
I think the late eighties, early nineties trend for sapphires (think Princess Diana) is coming round again. Also rose gold is showing a surge in popularity, as too are champagne diamonds.

Finally what can we expect from Lauren Adriana in the future…
The new collection is coming out in late autumn - and as soon as I know what it looks like, you will be the first to know!

BACKSTAGE: Allora Visuals and Niemierko

Last September Niemierko HQ was paid a visit by two unknowns in the world of weddings, Niki and Joshua from Allora Visuals. They met with Mark to discuss coming onboard and perhaps shooting one our weddings from the setup and detail point of view.

Mark, reluctant at first, agreed on the terms that a) they kept out his way, b) the couple never saw them and c) nor the guests. So they both attended a wedding planned by Mark on 2nd October at the Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire. They kept to their promise in keeping out of everyone’s way. In fact you’d have never known they were there.

Little did we know we would be so wowed with what would end up in our inboxes a few weeks after.

Allora have changed Niemierko in so many ways.

Thanks to Niki and Joshua, Niemierko now have more than just photo images to explain and sell to potential new couples, on what Niemierko does and why we are so different to other planners. We now have the most beautiful videos, with moving detail showcasing the work and effort that goes into each wedding. Although we don’t see Mr Niemierko lifting very much… he seems to point, shake and nod his head quite a lot however!!

But seriously these videos have also helped Mark sell and explain the production process to a client. Perhaps one of the most difficult elements to explain to a couple during planning, mainly due to the excessive costs that go into turning a space around. Now Niemierko couples can actually see why this work is so expensive, not just the detail but the sheer man power that is hired in to create the vision.

As you’ll see from the videos below Allora Visuals are now a crucial supplier to a Niemierko wedding day. A very sweet detail about these videos is that Mark has never told the couples that Allora are attending their wedding day. These three wedding couples received these videos as gifts from Mark, a memento of the detail and planning put in if you like. At Niemierko we are all about our couples remembering the planning as fondly as the wedding day itself.

Keep tuned, there will be lots more to come from the Niemierko and Allora partnership… we’ve got a feeling this is only just the beginning!

If he's keeping it traditional in the rest of his ensemble, I would do the same with his choice of shoes. Such a special day is the perfect opportunity to have a bespoke pair of shoes made for the service; and for the party afterwards, if he's not wearing a pair of my camuscio suede party shoes, a pair of hand embroidered tapestry slippers from Tapisserie in Walton Street.

Who would you say is an iconic Groom that you would love to wear Fins on their wedding day…
A pair of Fin's on the feet of Mick Jagger when he married Bianca in St. Tropez would be pretty sensational, time machine allowing...

What motivates you the most…

My fiancé wants to wear a top hat and tails for the wedding so I'm assuming his groomsmen will do the same, but I was also hoping to make the evening black tie and my dad would like to wear a tux. How does this work? It feels like two conflicting styles to me, but we want to have quite a formal evening. Please help! Also, where does one begin to look for tails that are stylish?

Traditionally top hat and tails is known as morning dress. Black tie specifically indicates that the occasion is a formal evening event. I’m quite traditional in that black or white tie shouldn’t be warn at 2pm in the afternoon, its evening attire, so should be warn at the earliest 5pm! If your fiancé wears morning suit this does allow other guests to wear lounge suits, three-piece suits and so on. Although I feel groomsmen (Best man, ushers and both fathers) should ideally match the Grooms attire. If you do choose black tie you have to make the wedding a Black tie event, meaning all male guests should adhere to this.

White tie and tails is a good medium of both the morning suit and black tie styles if you like. So perhaps worth a suggestion to your husband to be and father, keeping all parties happy. Do remember though the Groom is really your accessory for the day, he needs to feel comfortable. But all Grooms should be Gentlemanly in allowing you to stipulate what YOU would like for the day.

For stylish top hats and tails, if money is no object try Norton and Sons on Savile Row for a totally bespoke fit, or Spencer Hart is another Niemierko Grooms favourite. You also have the more traditional Gieves and Hawkes or Ede and Ravenscroft. If you insist on hiring you’ll find all outlets much of the same and surprisingly Moss Bros is one of the best options.

Escort cards are a fun talking point and really move away from the over-done seating plan. You can present escort cards in numerous ways from trees to moss covered notice boards. Or even have models handing the cards out, along with a buttonhole. Naturally a male model for lady guests and female models for gentlemen guests, this ensures a little cheeky flirt may take place!

But whatever you do please don’t name your tables after places you’ve visited, your favourite pets, or famous people. It’s been overdone and become rather tiresome. Just simply name your tables numerically. Another no-no would be those ghastly tall silver number holders, which will make your venue end up looking like a bingo hall. Instead insert them in table frames, or have waiters hold up a large ornate stand by each table.

BACKSTAGE: VALENTINE'S PARTY 2011

Last week Mark Niemierko and Caroline Burstein, Creative Director of Browns Fashion, co-hosted a romantic champagne reception to celebrate St Valentine’s Day at the Browns Bride boutique in London’s fashionable Marylebone.

Champagne and Rose petal martinis were served alongside canapés by famed caterers Peyton Events. Spearheaded by Oliver Peyton who brought his experience in creating innovative food design. The menu included Quails Egg & Pancetta, Cheese Soufflés and Venison and Blackcurrant Skewers.

One room within Browns Bride was lit into a mix of pinks and blues, for renowned cake designer Peggy Porschen. Within this dessert room Peggy had arranged for cupcakes, meringue kisses and delicious fondant fancies to be available for the guest’s enjoyment.

The sweet treats didn’t stop there. Peyton Events had several sweet treats in store from Macadamia Crème Brûlée, Tiramisu Balls and Raspberry and Chocolate Lollipops. All washed down with Espresso martinis.

Mark commissioned one of his favourite floral designers, Rob Van Helden, to create remarkable arrangements. Rob is the florist of choice to some of the biggest celebrity names from Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham and Valentino. Starlight Design ensured guests looked their best in flattering lighting, as well as installing a huge silk upholstered bar with shinny chrome top, along with a love seat.

Calligrapher Paul Antonio scribed love notes and hearts onto the Browns Brides fitting room mirrors.

DJ Matt Maurice had pre-mixed a soundtrack to the evening. London’s most famous accordion player Igor Outkine of Mazaika Music provided the live entertainment for the night.

All whilst respected wedding photographer David Willems captured the evening.

Lucky guests walked away with gift bags which included a bottle of Oscar de la Renta’s signature fragrance, “Oscar”, Browns Fashion’s 40th Anniversary Book, a Browns Fashion T-Shirt, Claridge’s Hotel pencil set, a heart shaped Jammy Dodger from Peyton Events and a DVD copy of “The Wedding Planner” starring Jennifer Lopez, with a florescent warning sticker across it which read “Unlike JLo, Mark Niemierko doesn’t run off with the Groom.”

The evening couldn’t have been more fun and fabulous. So much so the 8pm finish time was rather extended… to 11pm! Well what did you expect, at Niemierko we sure know how to throw a party in style!

My fiancé’s grandmother is without doubt the head of his family, everyone waits on her final decision before making their own. Needless to say she has somewhat taken over the planning of my big day. Requesting she approves the church venue, reception and even inviting thousands of associates from the family firm. Whilst my fiancé and I are more modern and quiet, we’d rather a small ceremony with close family and friends. We naturally want to add our own personalities to the day. How can I reach that happy medium without upsetting my future Grandmother-in-law?

Simple. Break your day up into parts. Perhaps allow her to take full or part control of some areas… The Ceremony for example is typically the most traditional part of a wedding day. Make this into more of an event, and make her feel involved. Another way is to have you and your fiancé narrow down the choice and get her input later down the line. For example when choosing the menu for your wedding reception, have two final dishes that you both like and let her select her favourite. That way she feels she’s made the choice, and it’ll be a choice you’ll be happy with. Involve her, ask for her opinion, as her opinion matters to you, the more you do this the more planning she’ll leave to you. As much as it’s your day, do remember there’s a difference in generations, she’s waited years to see her grandson get happily married.

It has been highly speculated in the last week that one of Niemierko’s favourite British fashion designers Phillipa Lepley could be designing Kate Middleton’s wedding gown, when she marries Prince William next year.

Well Phillipa isn’t just a favourite of Royals, Niemierko Brides love her just as much. In January this year one of our Brides, Mayasa, celebrated her wedding day at The Ritz in London, wearing a Phillipa Lepley gown. Nothing screams more timeless elegance than this chic design.

BACKSTAGE: A Royal Engagement

At Niemierko we do try to set trends with our Brides (and Grooms). Following last weeks Royal Engagement, and Prince William’s choice to propose with his mothers sapphire and diamond engagement ring, it reminded us of a previous Niemierko Bride who got married in December 2007.

That particular Bride had also chosen a sapphire and diamond ring, well perhaps her Groom did, just like Miss Middleton’s. However rather than opting for a trip down to jewellers Garrard & Co in Mayfair, our clients decided to privately commission designer Lorna MacGregor of Darcy Jewels to create something timeless and elegant. And wow did it sparkle on their wedding day!

Jasper Conran launched his made to measure Bridal Collection in 2007. His Georgian townhouse boutique, at 36 Sackville Street in Mayfair, is a Brides heaven. Aside from housing his Bridal collections, you can also have your groom fully fitted, as well as view his fabulous Wedgewood tableware collection. We find it exceptionally hard to leave whenever we visit.

Prior to showing his Spring/Summer 2011 collection at London Fashion Week, this Sunday, Jasper spoke all about British elegance and style with Mark.

Jasper what has inspired your current Bridal collection…
It has evolved organically from the previous one. I am currently working on new pieces, inspired by my catwalk collections. There is chantilly lace, some exquisite light corsetry underpinnings and some very light organza texture.

What words best describe your style…
Simple elegance and purity of cut.

Which iconic brides have you dressed…
I have loved dressing many brides, including Lady Sarah Chatto and Jasmine Guinness and I look forward to dressing many more.

What do you love about working within the wedding industry…
I like to dress people who enjoy what I do, if a woman feels great in one of my dresses or a man in one of my suits, then that makes me happy.

What can’t you live without…
My dogs.

What has been your proudest moment of your career so far…
The honour of being awarded an OBE in 2008.
